Markham Village Storm Sewer Upgrades  - NOTICE OF CONSTRUCTION / ROAD CLOSURE

We are writing to inform you of an upcoming construction project that will affect travel in the vicinity of Markham District High School.

As part of the Markham Village Phase 1A Flood Control Implementation Project, outfall construction works at Mount Joy Creek commenced on October 27, 2026. The project is intended to enhance flood protection within the community while ensuring minimal disruption to daily activities.

To facilitate construction and ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, portable Variable Message Signs have been installed along Church Street. These signs will provide real-time traffic updates and guidance, helping to improve traffic flow and safety in and around the construction zone near Markham District High School.

Please note the following traffic control plan:

Beginning in November 2026, the eastbound lane on Church Street will be closed between Bramble Way and Elm Street.

  • For motorists approaching Markham District High School from Elm Street:

    • No eastbound access to Church Street will be available from Elm Street.

    • Access to Markham District High School and local properties will be maintained from the westbound lane of Church Street.

    • A signed detour route will be provided to direct eastbound traffic toward Parkway Avenue.

  • For pedestrians approaching Markham District High School from Elm Street:

    • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction.

    • A temporary sidewalk will be provided along the south side of Church Street to accommodate pedestrian traffic safely around the work zone.

Please note that these traffic control measures may be adjusted as construction progresses. We encourage residents, parents, guardians, and students to remain attentive to Variable Message Signs and future communications from the City of Markham regarding any updates.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this project, please do not hesitate to contact the City of Markham’s Contact Centre at (905) 477-5530.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we complete these important infrastructure improvements.

York Region Public Health Covid-19 and Flu Vaccine Clinics

Respiratory virus season is here, and there are simple steps you can take to help protect yourself, your children, and those around you. Taking a layered approach can help reduce the spread of illness and support healthier schools, child care settings, and communities.

York Region Public Health is offering COVID-19 and influenza vaccine appointments until November 6, 2026 for everyone aged 6 months and older. Appointments can be booked online at //York.ca/VirusSeason.

There is no single way to prevent illness, so consider layering these measures for added protection:

  1. Stay up to date with recommended vaccinations
  2. Wash your hands regularly
  3. Cover coughs and sneezes
  4. Stay home when feeling sick
  5. Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings

To learn more about respiratory virus season, vaccine eligibility, and clinic locations, visit //York.ca/VirusSeason.

Thank you for helping to keep our schools, childcare centres, and communities healthy this season.

Sincerely,

York Region Public Health

New Grade 10 Civics Exam

As per the Ministry of Education's updated mandatory assessment and evaluation requirements for students in Grades 9 - 12, students currently taking the grade 10 Civics course (CHV2O1) will be writing their exam during their regularly scheduled Civics classes on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. If you or your child have any questions, please follow up directly with their Civics teacher.

Student Parking Reminder

All students who drive to school and park in the school parking lot must have a current parking pass displayed in the windshield of their car. Parking passes are made available after registering their vehicle at the main office. If your student is a driver, please remind them of this requirement. Thank you for your attention and support with this.

Take Our Kids to Work (TOKW) Day

On Wednesday, November 4th, 2026, Grade 9 students will have an opportunity to spend the day at a workplace of a parent/guardian, relative, friend or volunteer.

Please be advised that permission forms to participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day have been sent to both you and your child’s GAPPS account. We ask that you review the form with your child and then sign off as per the instructions.

Parents/Guardians can also choose to have their child participate independently in career exploration activities in a workplace or at home. Please indicate this choice on the permission form so that schools can plan appropriately.

If you have any questions, please contact your alpha guidance counsellor.
